The most convincing case for gun control is found in a slim Japanese neo-noir.

The shootings in Boulder make this topical, but I confess I’ve been sitting on this piece for a long time. In part, it’s because I’d hoped the coronavirus lockdown would make people more appreciative of public spaces, and less apt to terrorize them. But the main reason I’ve kept this under wraps is because it felt too much like another futile gesture in a culture that’s too willing to accept mass shootings as a fact of life.
